Directive abbreviation: Packaging and packaging waste (Packaging and packaging waste)

Directive name: Directive 94/62/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of December 20, 1994 on packaging and packaging waste

Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and waste packaging

Purpose: The main reason for the management/control of packaging materials is that after packaging materials are often used, they will be arbitrarily discarded by consumers and enter the environmental soil. The harmful substances contained in them will directly pollute the environment.

  Maximum concentration limit:

The European Union Packaging Materials Directive (94/62/EC) regulates the maximum concentration limits of the four major heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium):

Lead (Pb) + cadmium (Cd) + mercury (Hg) + hexavalent chromium (Cr+6)

The test objects include: product packaging cartons, cartons, wooden frames, film boxes, plastic bags, bubble bags, foam, polyol, fixtures, sheets, ropes, paint, ink, tape, glue, cable ties, labels, Instructions etc.

Requirements for heavy metals in the Packaging Waste Directive:

From June 30, 2001, the total amount of lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and mercury in all packaging and packaging components must not exceed 100 ppm

The "packaging component" is the smallest part of the package and can be easily separated by hand. Compliance with the directive is shown through testing or based on the results calculated from the heavy metal testing of packaging materials.

  Implementation date: September 3, 1999

  Scope of application:

  1. This directive relates to all packaging and all packaging waste put on the Community market, regardless of whether it is applied or discarded in industry, commerce, office, store, service, household or any other scope, and has nothing to do with the materials used.

  2. The application of this Directive does not affect existing packaging quality requirements, such as packaging products related to safety, health and hygiene, or existing transportation requirements or the provisions of Council Directive 91/689/EEC of December 12, 1991 on hazardous waste .
